The easiest way to wear cowboy boots is with straight or bootcut jeans over the shaft, so only the foot and toe show. From there, you can tuck slim jeans in to show the stitching, or wear them with a dress or skirt. Keep the rest of the outfit simple, and let the boots be the one Western piece that stands out.

How should jeans sit with cowboy boots?

There are two usual ways, and the cut of your jeans decides which works.

JeansHow to wear themWhat to watch for
BootcutOver the shaft, resting on the top of the footThe hem should clear the ground at the heel, so it doesn’t fray
StraightOver the shaft, if the leg is wide enough to sit neatlyA tight fit will bunch at the top of the boot
Slim or skinnyTucked inside the shaftChoose thin denim, as bulky fabric makes a boot feel tight
Wide or flaredOver the boot, with only the toe showingCheck the length with your boots on, as the heel adds height

Always try jeans on with your boots before having them shortened. The heel changes where the hem falls.

Should you tuck jeans into cowboy boots?

Only if you want to show the boots off, or if your jeans are too slim to go over them. Tucking in shows the full shaft, including any stitching or embroidery, so it works especially well with a decorative pair. With plainer boots, wearing your jeans over the top tends to look more natural.

What can women wear with cowboy boots?

Cowboy boots go well with most dresses and skirts, because the solid boot contrasts with lighter fabric.

  • Short or knee-length dresses: show the whole boot, and suit a tall or mid-calf shaft.
  • Midi and maxi skirts: let an ankle-height or tall boot peek out at the hem.
  • Denim skirts and shorts: a relaxed summer option, especially at festivals.

Leave a little gap between hem and shaft, unless the skirt is long enough to cover it completely. See our range of women’s cowboy boots.

Can men wear cowboy boots with smart clothes?

Yes, and with a jacket they can look very sharp. A dark, plain leather boot with an almond or pointed toe works best, worn under straight, well-pressed trousers that fall over the shaft. Match your belt to the leather, and keep embroidery subtle. See our range of men’s cowboy boots.

How do I stop looking like I’m in fancy dress?

Wear one or two Western pieces at a time, and keep the rest of your outfit everyday. Boots with a plain T-shirt and jeans look natural. Add a Western shirt or a belt with a buckle if you like, but be wary of adding a hat, a bolo tie and fringing all at once, unless that’s the point of the occasion.

What socks should I wear with cowboy boots?

Choose socks that come higher than the top of the shaft, or at least well up the calf, because this stops the shaft rubbing your leg. Thin to medium socks suit most people. Very thick ones can make a well-fitting boot feel tight, so wear what you wore when you measured your feet.

Can I wear cowboy boots in British weather?

You can, with some care. Leather handles an occasional shower, particularly if it’s been conditioned and treated. Smooth leather sole boots can be slippery on wet pavements, so take it slowly until the sole has roughened up, or consider a rubber sole if you’ll be out in the rain a lot. Let wet boots dry naturally, away from radiators. Our boot care guide has the details.

How do I walk in cowboy boots?

Give yourself a few short wears before a long day out. The sole starts stiff and the heel may be higher than you’re used to, so your stride can feel different at first. Take care on stairs and polished floors, particularly with a smooth leather sole. As the sole flexes and the leather softens, walking in them should start to feel natural.

What belt goes with cowboy boots?

Match the colour of your belt to your boots if you can, as it gives an outfit a finished look. A plain leather belt suits everyday wear, and a larger buckle adds a Western touch for going out. If you’ve chosen an embroidered boot, a plainer belt stops the two competing.

What’s a good first pair?

Most people start with a plain brown or black boot, a round, almond or square toe, and a lower heel. That combination goes with the most outfits and is the easiest to walk in. Ankle boots or ropers are a gentle way in if a taller shaft feels like too much. Once you know you like wearing them, you can go for something bolder.
