Boot care

Everything you need to look after leather boots

Leather boots last for years if you clean and feed them. Our boot care range is from Collonil, the German leather care specialist founded in 1909. It includes the 1909 Supreme Shoe Cream and Leather Lotion, Rustical care for oiled and waxed leathers, suede and shine brushes, polishing cloths, shoe trees and insoles.

Most care products cost under £12, so a full kit costs less than a meal out.

A simple routine for cowboy boots

  1. Brush. Remove dust and dirt with a cleaning brush, paying attention to the welt where the sole meets the upper.
  2. Clean. Wipe with a slightly damp cloth and let the boots dry naturally, away from radiators.
  3. Condition. Apply a thin layer of leather lotion or cream with an application brush. Use a colourless cream for any colour, or a matching colour to cover scuffs.
  4. Buff. Polish with a shine brush or cloth.
  5. Store. Use shoe trees to hold the shape and absorb moisture.

Suede and oiled leather

Suede needs a suede brush rather than cream. Oiled and waxed leathers, often used on work and biker boots, respond best to products made for them, such as Collonil Rustical.

Questions

Boot care: your questions

How often should I condition cowboy boots?

Every month or two if you wear them often, and whenever the leather looks dry or after the boots have been wet.

Can I use colourless cream on coloured boots?

Yes. Colourless cream nourishes any colour of smooth leather without changing the shade.

Do I need shoe trees for cowboy boots?

They help. Shoe trees keep the foot of the boot in shape and help leather dry evenly after wear.
