Cowboy boots should feel snug across the instep, give your toes room to move, and let your heel lift slightly as you walk. With no laces to hold your foot, the instep does the work, so that’s the part to get right. A good pair feels firm at first and softens with wear, but it should never pinch.
Where should cowboy boots feel tight, and where loose?
Think of the boot in four parts. Each has its own job, so check them one at a time.
| Part of the boot | Right fit | Too small or too big |
|---|---|---|
| Instep (top of the foot) | Held firmly, like a firm handshake | Pressing or numb is too tight. Sliding forward is too loose |
| Ball of the foot | Sits at the widest part of the sole | Sitting ahead of the widest part usually means the boot is too short |
| Toes | Room to wiggle them | Toes touching the end, or pressed from the sides |
| Heel | Lifts about half a centimetre as you walk | Sliding right up and down means too big. No movement at all can mean too small |
How much heel slip is normal?
Expect around half a centimetre of lift when a pair is new. A boot’s sole starts out stiff, so your heel rises a little until the sole has learned to bend with your foot. As the leather and sole soften, most of that movement settles.
Too much slip is different. If your heel rises far enough that your foot feels as if it’s walking separately from the boot, try a smaller size or a narrower fitting. Rubbing that doesn’t ease after a few short wears is another sign that the fit is wrong.
Should it be hard to pull cowboy boots on?
A little, yes. There’s often a moment of resistance as your heel passes the narrow part of the boot, followed by a soft drop as your foot settles into place. That’s a good sign, because the part that resists is the part that will hold your foot.
If you can’t get your foot past the instep at all, however hard you pull, the boot is too small or too narrow for you. Leather does give with wear, but you shouldn’t count on it to fix a boot you can barely put on.
Do cowboy boots stretch?
Leather boots mould to your foot over time, mostly across the ball of the foot and the instep. The length doesn’t really change. That’s why a boot can start snug across the top and become comfortable, but one that’s too short will stay too short.
How much a boot gives depends on the leather and how it’s made, so treat this as a rough rule rather than a promise. Softer leathers tend to give more than stiffer ones.
How do I measure my feet for cowboy boots?
- Measure later in the day, because feet are slightly larger in the afternoon.
- Wear the socks you’ll wear with your boots. Cowboy boots are usually worn with socks that come above the top of the shaft or at least well up the calf, to stop rubbing.
- Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, and mark the tip of your longest toe.
- Measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres. Do both feet, and use the longer measurement.
Most of our boots are listed in EU sizes, and every product page shows its size system. Conversions vary between makers, so see our size guide, or contact us with your measurement if you’re unsure.
Does the toe shape change the fit?
It changes how much space your toes have, but not where your foot sits. Your foot ends well before a pointed toe does, so the extra length is simply boot. A narrow toe can still feel tighter across the toes, though, and a broad square one gives them the most room. Our guide to cowboy boot toe shapes compares them.
What about wide calves?
If the shaft is the problem rather than the foot, measure around the widest part of your calf and compare it with the shaft details on the product page, where given. Wearing thick socks or tucking in jeans takes up room, so allow for whatever you plan to wear inside the boot. Ask us if a measurement isn’t listed.
How can I test the fit at home?
Try new boots indoors on a clean carpeted floor, in the socks you’ll wear with them, and walk around for a few minutes. Keep any tags attached until you’re sure. Under our returns policy, you can try items on as you would in a shop, but wear beyond that, such as scuffed soles, may reduce your refund. If you’d rather not guess, you can try boots on in our London store.
What should I do next?
Once you know your size, browse men’s cowboy boots, women’s cowboy boots or kids’ cowboy boots. When you’ve found your pair, our boot care guide will help them last.
